Meet Our Principal
July 29, 2016
Dear Parkside Panthers,
As many of you know my name is Mary Jane Boynton and I was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Along with my sister Emma, I was raised by my parents, in Perth, Scotland. I graduated from Perth Academy in 1988. I received my Bachelor of Education (Honors) in Music from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama/Jordanhill College of Education in 1992. Immediately upon graduating I began my teaching career as a High School Music Teacher at St. Columbus High School in Clydebank, Scotland; as well as a visiting Elementary Music Teacher for four feeder elementary schools. In 1994 I took six months leave of absence so I could study voice with Antoinette Miggiani at the Johann Straus School of Music in Malta. On returning to Scotland I earned my Licentiate in Vocal Performance from the Royal College of Music in 1995.
In 1996, to my mother’s dismay, I resigned from my teaching position, and decided to pack up and move to Mexico, where I taught English as a Second Language for the next five years. In 2001 I moved to the USA and began my USA teaching career at Metz Middle School in Manassas City as an ESOL teacher. While at Metz, I was the SGA sponsor, their first girls Lacrosse coach, and sponsored their drama club. Our many productions included "Annie", "Bugsy" and "The Wizard of Oz".
I earned my Master of Educational Leadership from George Mason University in 2007. In July 2007 I joined PWCS and became a middle school administrator; four years as an assistant principal and now as principal of Parkside. I defended my dissertation early 2013, and graduated May 18, 2013 with my Doctorate in Philosophy in Education from George Mason University. My areas of specialty and research are adolescent literacy and reading for adolescents as well as educational leadership.
I currently reside in Bristow, Virginia with my husband and our son.
I am honored on a daily basis to be your principal. Parkside is an extremely special place and the students are some of the most inspirational young individuals I have ever had the pleasure working with in my career. Together as a community: parents, students, faculty, staff, and administration, there are endless possibilities for all of our students. As we enter our fourth year as a Cambridge International School, the first in Virginia, the opportunities just keep evolving. "Together We Can" make a difference!
Please feel free to come by and meet with me, or if you don't have the time just call or email. I am here to work with you to support your student.
