Updated Friday, April 24:

Our focus this week will be work ethic.  It is one of the competencies for CTE.  Think about the following questions:

  • What are some examples of positive work ethic?
  • Why is a positive work ethic valued by teachers and employers?

Then, watch the following two video clips:

Points to ponder:

Do you have a good work ethic?  Defend that answer with examples.

Why do you think that there are so many videos and articles about work ethic?

Which do you think is more important creativity or work ethic?

Updated Friday, April 17:

Our focus this week will be creativity.  It is one of the competencies for CTE.  You may answer the following questions:

Are you a creative person?  (Of course you should defend that answer.)

Then, watch the following two videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTCOExd0hDk

https://youtu.be/6unnLOsXHxM

Finally, creative thinking is the ability to look at situations with a fresh perspective. It involves thinking outside of the box and proposing new ways to address problems or challenges. Creative thinkers tend to be curious and brainstorm new perspectives or solutions.

Why is being a creative thinker so important in the workplace?

If you have any questions, I will be available via email or phone during class or "office hours".  (And most any other time Monday through Friday.)

 Just for fun:

To practice using the ruler

The Way Things Work game.  You will love this b/c it is what you all do.  You get to watch someone else play the game!

Why we pull our hair up.  Most of you have seen this one.

Check out what one guy developed as a safety feature.  Do NOT try this at home!

Also, the following are a few more suggestions for fun activities during the enforced absence from school. None of these projects are mandatory or graded! They are just meant to be fun and educational and keep your mind active!

  1. If you or a household member has a Prince William County library card, you can use the card number to access Lynda.com, which is an online learning platform. It has free step by step directions to learn numerous software programs. Autodesk Inventor is one of the programs and there are numerous others. Email me with questions.
  2. If you have a Lego set at home, construct a bridge that will support a bag of sugar or flour. Take a picture and email it to me.
  3. Look that the blocks below and see if you can figure out the answers to the questions. How many bricks are touching brick 1, 2, 3, 4 in each of the examples. This is a spatial and visual awareness fun game that I made up so test yourself. It is not as easy as it looks!

Our 6th grade classes are  all about electricity.  We will make three take home projects and cover resistors, motors, electromagnets, circuits with a little woodworking and some computer aided design.  Everything we do will be a preview for physical science and our class falls under the CTE (career and technical education).

Our 7th and 8th grade students are doing an engineering and design course in which they make two take home projects: the SOMA cube and the Peg Board game.  Some students will have time for a small third project.

All take-home projects in all grade levels will come home with a note to me for you to sign.  This is not a grade but just for verification that students did in fact show parents the project.
