Welcome to Life and Physical Science!

Welcome to 7th and 8th grade Science! My name is Dr. Lisa Daniels. I am excited about the opportunity to get to know you and your parents/guardians.  I am looking forward to a fun and productive school year.  Seventh grade curriculum areas that we will focus on this year include characteristics of living things, cell function & structure, cell theory, cell processes & photosynthesis, cell division, evolution & genetic variation, classification, DNA & heredity, ecology, and biomes. Eighth grade curriculum areas that we will focus on this year include nature & conservation of matter, atomic structure & organization, the Period Table of Elements, energy & transformations, thermal energy & heat transfer, sound & light energy, electricity & magnetism, work, force, and motion.  Emphasis will be placed on the developing the following skills through both grades: scientific literacy, experimental design, scientific thinking & problem solving, scientific applications and S.T.E.M. infusion, introduction to engineering design (8th grade), laboratory protocols and safety, and scientific writing & presentation skills.  Below you will find several important pieces of information pertaining to science class.  If you find you still have questions, please feel free to email me at daniellc@pwcs.edu

Materials needed for Science Class: 

**Other than the 3-ring binder, the science supplies are the same supplies that most students will need for many of their classes.  We suggest that the pencils, pens, colored pencils and sharpener be kept in a pencil pouch that is carried to all classes throughout the day.  Keep a small supply of paper in your binder and simply add more later in the year as necessary. The only “science specific” supply needed is the binder!**

  1. One 3-ring notebook (1-2”) used only for science (rings hold papers inside) – by Tuesday, September 3, 2019
  2. Lined notebook paper
  3. Several pencils, dark -ink pens (blue or black), one set of colored pencils and/or pens, highlighter, and small pencil sharpener
  4. Page dividers and sheet protectors (optional)

 

Student FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions):

1. What should I bring to class each day?    Science notebook with paper, pencil, pens and colored pencils.

2. Will students be assigned projects?  Yes, sometimes students will work together in class to do an in-class project.  There will also be an independent research project that all students must complete.

3. Must students create a science fair project (independent inquiry project)?  No, however all students have the opportunity to complete an independent project, which they can choose to present at the Science Fair if they wish.  Science Projects are an important part of the overall middle school science experience.  Science Students will be encouraged to complete a traditional science fair project.  The Parkside Middle School Science Fair will be held in February.

4. Is there a lot of homework?  Students are expected to spend a few minutes in the evenings reviewing any new material learned in class that day.  It is particularly important that students learn ALL vocabulary words so that they understand the language of physical science.

About me

I love science!  I have a B.A. in Biology from LaSalle University in Philadelphia, a M.A. in Biology from the University of South Dakota, and a Ph.D., along with R.D.N., in Nutrition/Biochemistry from the University of Minnesota. I grew up in Northern Virginia and have a daughter attending school in Prince William County so I am not only a teacher in the Prince William County Schools, but a parent.  I love a hands-on, logical approach to learning about science and the world around us. This will be my second year teaching at Parkside Middle School.  I look forward to bringing my experience into the classroom.
