"What lies behind us
and what lies before us
are tiny matters
compared to what
lies within us." ~ O.W. Holmes
WELCOME TO ENCORE
The second half of the year is upon us. Students took their mid-year Lexile test to find out how much their reading level improved in just 5 months. Most students were extremely happy with their progress. Seeing that their efforts have paid off is working as an incentive to keep going. The students that did their best, had the best results.
This week we started a new reading unit. All three readings in this unit concern peer pressure. This has already lead to good discussions. I hope this information will lead to interesting discussions in your homes, also.
4/21/17 We're back from spring break, and entering the home stretch toward SOLs. This includes the reading SOL for all grade levels.
During SSR (sustained silent reading) students may read their own book, a classroom book, or a Read 180 book. It is just important we READ, READ, READ - to build up their reading stamina, their vocabulary, and their reading comprehension.
In small group, we continue to work on many skills, but we are concentrating on inferencing. Students have been discussing and writing about recognizing the difference between positive and negative peer pressure, and short-term vs long-term thinking. They have written scenarios, planning what they will do when faced with negative peer pressure. Next week we will have a vocabulary and comprehension quiz to wrap up Unit 5.
