Welcome to 8th Grade Civics!
In this class, students will embark on a journey to discover how the American Government functions. They will unearth topics like citizenship, the political process, Constitutional foundations, the three branches of government, judicial systems and the structure and operation of the United States Economy. Although the path of this journey can be difficult, it will be well worth the time it takes to complete it.
I will be Your guide for this journey. I am Mr. Heim. I have been working in Prince William County for sixteen years. For twelve years, I taught language arts, so I will expect my students to write well and with conviction. I taught one year of physical science and this will be my third year teaching Civics.
I expect my students to apply their academic skills in three assessment areas: Vocabulary, projects and tests/quizzes. With regard to vocabulary, students need to learn to use our content vocabulary effectively in sentences. I want students to apply the meaning of the words they look up in sentences because that will enable me to monitor their understanding of the words and the concepts associated with the word.
I also require students to work in collaborative groups to complete content projects. For example students created third party posters and platforms. This enabled me to determine student progress on specific objectives. Most students embrace this approach because it offers them the opportunity to collaborate with their classmates and if they work effectively they all prosper.
In addition to vocabulary and project work, students must perform on standards based quizzes and exams. I will administer quizzes every two to three weeks to track student progress. Most of the assessments are multiple choice, short answer and essay response. The vocabulary quizzes help students with the standards based tests. I will also administer periodic benchmark exams that all eighth grade students must take. The benchmark allows the civics teachers to compare and contrast trends in our student progress.
