Mrs. Trinette Drake
Welcome to 7th grade Language Arts and Journalism!
In Language Arts, we will dive into literature and writing. We will read the following novels: Wonder by R.J. Palacio, The Cay by Theodore Taylor, and The Liberation of Gabriel King by K.L. Going. I have a class set of each novel but I always encourage students to have their own copy. We will focus on vocabulary, figurative language, and comprehension of each novel. Students will write a personal narrative during the first nine weeks of school. Each student needs a composition book and pencil pouch with the following items every day for class - pencils, small pencil sharpener, glue stick, and scissors.
In Journalism, students will learn the fine art of newspaper writing and will publish four editions of the school newspaper, the Parkside Panther Press. We will focus on feature writing, sports writing, and reviews/editorials. Students will dive deep into the First Amendment and the history of journalism. Each student needs a composition book, a pencil, a flash drive, and a lanyard.
A Bit About Me
This is my 10th year teaching, my fourth year at Parkside. Prior to teaching in Virginia, I taught in Texas. I became a teacher because I love children and am passionate about reading and writing. I am particularly interested in non-fiction books like biographies, historical events, and self-help books.
Prior to teaching, I was in the Air Force for 13 years. I have been married for 22 years and have two sons and a step-son ages 24, 22, and 20. I have two furry kids - an 11-year-old Maltese, Nikki and a 2-year-old Shih Tzu, Gatsby. Nikki is named after my favorite author Nicholas Sparks and Gatsby is named after my favorite book The Great Gatsby.
In my spare time, I enjoy photography and traveling to new places.
